50 Years Since the Zaire Congo River Expedition.

We've got an exciting new announcement ahead of AAF25! At the past two festivals, we've been lucky enough to be joined by Colonel John Blashford Snell. Both times, he's captivated the AAF audience and both times, he's sold out of books in record time! We love having John join us at the festival so when he suggested returning in 2025 how could we say no?! This year is 50 years since the Zaire Congo River Expedition so John will be talking about this famous adventure!

In October 1974 the Scientific Exploration Society launched one of Britain's largest scientific expeditions.  The aim was to carry out research and study the cause of the dreaded “river blindness” disease along the 2,700 mile river.

Some 165 servicemen, medical experts and scientists from ten nations, led by the explorer, John Blashford-Snell used giant inflatable boats and innovative jet craft to navigate the giant river's formidable rapids. Landrovers, Range Rovers, a train and an Army Beaver plane supported this massive four month project and it resulted in the founding of Operation Drake and Raleigh which have helped to develop leadership in 50,000 young men and women.
